Rooney issues goals vow

Wayne Rooney has hit back at criticism of his early season form and promised that he will start scoring goal for Manchester United.

Rooney has not scored in 3 games now

The 29-year-old England international captain has been played in the main striker role for the Red Devils so far in the opening games with boss Louis van Gaal entrusting him to fill the void left by the respective departures of Robin van Persie and Radamel Falcao this summer.

However Rooney has so far failed to find the net in three games which has resulted in critics expressing doubts that he can be classed as an out-and-out goalscorer at this stage of his career having featured in a deeper midfield role for the majority of last term.

Rooney remains cool

But he remains confident that he can redsicover the form which saw him score an impressive 34 goals when he was last played as a main striker in the 2011-12 campaign.

Rooney said: “I’ve had one bad game this season [against Aston Villa] and everyone’s all over it. I’ve had that throughout my career but hopefully at the weekend I can get off the mark.

“It’s early on in the season – we’re just three games in. I’ve experienced this criticism before and the goals will come, I know that.

“I understand I have to be the one who’s going to lead that line for us and try and find the goals for us.”

He added: “I’m an honest guy. I know when I don’t play well and against Aston Villa I was below my standards.

“My mind is clear. I know how to play the role. It’s just a case of getting the chances and taking them, which I’m hopefully going to do soon.”

Rooney to score against Newcastle?

Rooney will hope to get off the mark in Manchester United’s visit of Newcastle on Saturday and he is 5/6 (1.83) with bet365 to score anytime in the game.
